The Earth's Magnetic Field Can Shift 10 Times Faster than Predicted



 Earth's magnetic field is created by the movement of molten iron in the outer core of our planet. Even so, its detailed changes continue to confuse scientists. We know the poles move and can even turn around, but much remains to be revealed in this process.

A series of recent simulations, published in Nature Communication, show that the Earth's magnetic field can shift ten times faster than predicted so far. In particular, this rapid change may occur when the field is at its weakest point, such as during a polar reversal — where the position of the pole changes dramatically for several thousand years before returning to normal.

The simulation covers the last 100 thousand years and tries to reproduce geological findings related to polar reversals in the past. Researchers found changes in the direction of the field in speeds up to ten times with variations up to one degree per year. This modeling found the cause of changes in the core, about 2,800 kilometers below the surface.

"We have incomplete knowledge about the Earth's magnetic field 400 years ago. However, since this rapid change represents the extreme behavior of the fluid core, it can provide important information about the inside of the Earth, "said Dr Chris Davies, a researcher from the University of Leeds.

The evolution of magnetic fields can leave traces on certain rocks. Scientists have used this geological record to track changes in magnetic fields for thousands of years. They believe, evidence of this rapid and dramatic reversal can occur in rocks at low latitudes.

"Understanding whether computer simulations of magnetic fields accurately reflect their physical behavior can be very challenging," said Professor Catherine Constable, vice study leader.

"In this case, computer simulations have been able to show very good agreement on the level of change and the general location of the most extreme events. Further study of the dynamics that develop in this simulation offers a useful strategy for documenting how fast change occurs. Also whether the condition was found during a stable magnetic polarity as it is today, "he concluded.

Heat waves melt Siberian Tundra and cause fires


Continuous sunny weather and climate change that occurred for months made Siberia experience extreme heat.

In addition to producing high Arctic temperatures in June, heat has ignited forest fires, including tundra fires.

The fire in this normally cold and wet landscape is alarming to ecologists and climate scientists. Because the Arctic is undergoing rapid changes that can have a major impact on local and global consequences.

The fire itself can also exacerbate global warming by burning deep into the soil and releasing carbon that has accumulated as frozen organic material for hundreds of years.

"This is not yet a major contribution to climate change," said Thomas Smith, an environmental geographer at the London School of Economics at National Geographic. "

Around mid-June, fires began to spread throughout Siberia, said Mark Parrington, a senior scientist at the Navel of Europe's Mid-Term Weather Forecast.

Scientists were also shocked by the fire that burned the ecosystem. Smith has investigated it using a combination of land cover maps and satellite data. He found that fires engulfed northern boreal forests and carbon-rich peatlands. In all cases, the burned ecosystem is on frozen ground which consists of permafrost.

Meanwhile, the tundra fire is not the first thing. A fire in the northern tundra happened in 2003.

Worse, Amazon Deforestation Increases 25 Percent from Last Year



Lately, the eyes of the world have been diverted from the Amazon forest because of their focus on the corona virus pandemic. The latest report, published by the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE), reveals surprising numbers of increased deforestation there.

Forest fires in the Amazon caught the attention of many people in 2019, but that was not enough to protect it. According to the latest data, 3,066 square kilometers of Amazon forest were destroyed in the first six months of 2020 — an increase of 25% from last year in the same period.


In June 2020, deforestation reached a monthly record of 1,033 square kilometers, 10.7% higher at the same time last year and 24.3% higher than May 2020.

The unpublished INPE report explains that if deforestation continues to increase at the same pace as this, then we are on a "path of destruction" that has not happened since 2005.

With summer just beginning on the Amazon, the risk of forest fires is at its peak. Last year, the record of forest fires in the summer was very worrying. Criticism of the Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro, who was considered to have encouraged illegal logging, mining and land conversion in the Amazon and failed to implement conservation.

There were recorded around 2,248 forest fires that occurred in the Amazon at the end of last month, which exceeded the June 2019 figure. This raises concerns that the coming months will be even worse.


Bolsonaro has repeatedly rejected criticism of his handling of the Amazon emergency. According to Reuters, Bolsonaro has deployed military forces to prevent deforestation. He will also announce a ban on lighting fires around the Amazon forest. However, his efforts so far have not produced positive results.
